Canine Leishmania disease is from a sandfly bite similar to a mosquito, found in southern Italy where our original Volpino's came from. Only 2 that we know immigrated to America had the disease, one is now 12 years old only due to digilent care, the other they didn't know in time, so it died when he was about 9. The Fly has now been found in all the Mediterranean areas as well as South America and Brazil. 

 

All Breeders in America and Canada are all Clear of this disease

Before you buy a Volpino puppy in Italy please have them do a blood test to see if it has leishmania.
